One of the highlights of the Club’s year is the ‘Scottish Evening’ to mark the Burns season and this year members and friends of the Club enjoyed an evening of music, song, verse and prose at the Kingarth Hotel on the 19th January – and what an evening!

The formalities began with the piping in of the haggis by the young, talented Mathew Daniels followed by the Address to the Haggis given by guest Rotarian Bruce MacPherson which signalled the start of the evening’s entertainment. Guests were enthralled by the fiddle playing skills of Charles Soane who played a selection of traditional Scottish tunes. The Rotary Ladies Choir gave a beautiful rendition of Highland Cathedral followed by The Glasgow Underground with the all guests joining in enthusiastically to sing the chorus.

Our guest speaker for the evening was Kathleen MacPherson who had the audience in gales of laughter has she spoke of her connections with a number of Hollywood stars, including Wallace Beery, Peter O’Toole, Mel Gibson and Roy Rogers! It is never easy to follow a speaker as accomplished as Kathleen, but the Rotary Boys’ Choir rose to the occasion accompanied by the superb Lyn Bulloch on key board. Following the tale of Wee Jeannie McColl all inhibitions were put aside as the ‘Boys’ went on to tell the story of a drunken Scotsman who ended up with a first prize of a blue ribbon tied to a delicate part of his body!

Rotarian Dan Edgar gave a speech entitled ‘Paws for Thought’ with tales of various women who had had an influence on his professional and personal life; a talk which was interspersed with songs led by Charles Soane on the fiddle.

What can only be described as a delightful, fun evening was brought to a close by Rotarian Wendy Brownlie with a vote of thanks to all who had made the evening so thoroughly enjoyable.
